Scaling the Matching Engine

The platform needed real-time ride matching to scale five-fold — without matching quality or live tracking degrading as concurrency climbed. Dispatch is unforgiving: a matching algorithm that hesitates loses the rider, and one that over-commits strands drivers. The platform also had to run operations across multiple countries from a single panel. We co-architected the platform end to end — from the expanding-radius matching engine and the Socket.io live-tracking layer down to the data model underneath dispatch, onboarding, and payments, with React Native in the field.

Key Decisions

Expanding-radius matching — match radius grows with wait time, balancing fill rate against pickup ETA for predictable behavior under both quiet and surge conditions. Sockets for live state — rider-facing ETA and driver tracking run over persistent Socket.io connections, keeping live state cheap at 1,000 concurrent requests.

The Outcome (2018–2022)

Concurrent ride requests scaled from 200 to 1,000 with live tracking throughout, and multi-country operations run from a single panel. Riders kept live ETAs through five-fold growth in concurrency, and operators ran multi-country fleets without ever splitting the stack. Engagement 2018–2022.
