HIPAA-aware Rx commerce

The Challenge
Optum faced challenges in enhancing their healthcare service platform to better support the growing demand for data-driven solutions. The need was for a scalable, secure, and flexible platform to handle large-scale data processing while maintaining privacy and compliance standards in the healthcare industry.
The Solution in Depth
A Next.js front-end using SSR + ISR, a single typed GraphQL contract shared across surfaces, and a library of UI primitives for refill and account flows. UI primitives kept the sensitive paths consistent and auditable, while SSR + ISR kept discovery pages fast without rebuilding the site for every content change. We built a Next.js storefront with SSR for discovery and ISR for scale, a single typed GraphQL contract shared across every surface, UI primitives for prescription refill and account flows, and HIPAA-aware data handling patterns across the funnel.
Key Decisions
One typed contract — every surface consumes the same typed GraphQL schema, so refill, account, and marketing pages can't drift apart, and changes surface at compile time. SSR where it sells, ISR where it scales — discovery pages render server-side for SEO and speed; high-traffic content regenerates incrementally instead of rebuilding the world.
The Outcome (2020–2023)
HIPAA-aware prescription commerce operating at scale on one typed contract — fast where buyers browse, rigorous where patients transact. The single typed contract meant surfaces couldn't drift: a schema change surfaced at compile time, not in production in front of a patient. Engagement 2020–2023.
