What a dedicated engineering team actually costs in 2026
By Nugen Team | July 9, 2026

Most agencies make you book a call to learn a number they already know. We'd rather publish the bands and spend the call on your product. Here is what senior engineering capacity actually costs in 2026, what moves the number, and how to compare options honestly.
The bands, published
* Dedicated senior engineer: $7,500 – $9,500 per engineer, per month
* Dedicated team (blended, 4–10 people): $25,000 – $60,000 per month
* Fixed project build: $30,000 – $150,000 for a defined outcome
* Staff augmentation (blended hourly): $45 – $65 per hour
These are indicative 2026 bands, validated per engagement. They reflect one deliberate position: premium relative to offshore body shops, a clear value relative to onshore boutiques — priced on seniority and outcomes, never on being the cheapest bid.
What moves the number
Four things, in practice:
1. Team composition. A squad with a staff-level tech lead, an AI engineer, and a product designer costs more than three full-stack generalists — and finishes different work.
2. Ownership depth. A team that owns outcomes (architecture through on-call) prices differently from staff augmentation where you keep the management overhead.
3. Duration and continuity. Longer commitments amortize onboarding. The expensive part of any engagement is the first month; continuity is where the margin of value lives.
4. Compliance surface. HIPAA-aware healthcare commerce or fintech audit trails add review cycles that pure product work doesn't carry.
The comparison buyers actually need
The honest math is never “rate × hours.” It's cost against the alternatives:
* In-house senior hire (US): roughly $220k+ fully loaded, a 3–6 month search, and real odds the first hire isn't right. Correct for your core, forever team — slow for a deadline.
* Cheap offshore body shop: half the monthly rate, junior-heavy delivery, and the cost shows up later as rework, missed deadlines, and a codebase nobody wants to inherit. Code that technically works — and a product that commercially doesn't.
* Onshore boutique: comparable product judgment, often at 2–3× the rate, with waitlists to match.
The band that matters isn't the invoice — it's the cost per shipped outcome. A team at $40k/month that ships your activation rebuild in eleven weeks is cheaper than a $20k/month team still “in discovery” at week eleven.
How to pressure-test any quote (ours included)
* Ask for named engineers with CVs before contract — if the pitch team and delivery team differ, the real rate is hidden.
* Ask what a week of output looks like — the only status that can't be faked is working software on a live URL.
* Ask who owns the code and IP — the answer should be “you,” unconditionally.
* Ask what happens at handover — documentation, warranty window, and knowledge transfer should be in the price, not an upsell.
We publish our numbers because we run the same math from the inside — we build and operate our own SaaS, so we know exactly what a senior month of engineering is worth when it ships. If your budget and the bands above overlap, the discovery call is free — and candid.
